The Challenge
Walter Beede has spent over 40 years in baseball — an All-New England high school player, a 1981 Chicago Cubs draft pick, a coach who has guided more than 700 student athletes, and the father of two college and professional players, including MLB pitcher Tyler Beede. His previous books, including The Process and The Recruiting Process, were practical guides built on that coaching expertise. There’s an E at the End was something different: a personal memoir about losing his father at sixteen, and the throughline from the sandlots of Lynn, Massachusetts to the major-league mound where his son would one day stand. It’s a more interior, more sustained act of remembering than anything he’d written before — raw, personal material that needed structure without losing the plainspoken, restrained voice that made it honest.
The Approach
I started with a written editing roadmap before touching a single sentence — a diagnostic covering organization, tone, consistency, and voice, and explicitly naming what not to fix:
- Developmental Editing: A full structural pass across the manuscript’s Prologue and three Acts — reorganizing chapter order where the narrative’s memory-driven structure needed a clearer throughline, and making sure each section carried its own emotional weight.
- Line Editing & Proofreading: Multiple line-level passes across every part of the manuscript, watching for repetitive memory loops while protecting Walter’s plainspoken, working-class New England voice — deliberately leaving rough-but-honest sentences alone rather than over-polishing them into something that didn’t sound like him.
The Results
The finished manuscript — roughly 52,400 words across a Prologue, three Acts, and a Coda — moved from a working draft to a locked, publication-ready book over multiple structural and line-editing passes:
